While visiting the new “Science of Spying” exhibit at the Ontario Science Centre, I was delighted to come across a display on evading facial recognition cameras. While the display was ostensibly about spies in the James Bond sense of the word, this section was definitely more “urban guerrilla” in its tone. From the Exhibit:
“Simple face modification masks and stickers change the contours, features and temperature patterns picked up by facial recognition systems. They turn a recognizable face into one that video surveillance monitors can no longer identify. Could grotesque faces become a fashion statement for people who want to evade automatic classification systems?”
I love the underlying sentiment that this is not just for spies, but for anyone who wants to remain private. I also love the whimsical, beautiful design of many of these pieces.
