Working with the community for the community

My education philosophy can be summed up in one word: community. But of course, that one word contains multitudes, many concentric sicles spreading outward from the student. I strive to focus on families, as families are our students’ first true teachers and knowledge keepers. Looking at the next circle out from families, I try to focus on the greater community, the environment where the student lives their day-to-day lives. This includes examining the systems that make up the environment and how these systems work worldwide to impact the health, well-being, and future of the students. Giving voice and decentering myself through a carefully curated selection of resources and guests is a cornerstone of community building. Working with the students, starting with them, and spreading outwards to their families, the community, and the world, giving them a voice in their education, and preparing them to be changemakers is a humbling task.
